Cody is an amazing swimmer, student and very involved in the community. Anyone that meets him is affected by his spirit for life. Cody was born with a rare medical condition that caused him to have legs amputated at the knees when he was very young. But that has not stopped Cody. He has participated in any sport and activity he wants to. His motto in life is “Be Strong! Never Give Up!”. With thinking like that he has been able to accomplish so much at a very young age.
One of Cody’s goals is to swim for Team USA in the Paralympics. The Paralympics are just like the Olympics, but for people with physical challenges or differences. He plans to be on the Paralympic Team in 2020 in Toyko, Japan, but along the way will be able to represent the USA in many other events. He beats swimmers with legs all the time! He is very focused and on top of all of his school work earning straight A’s. He also has been on the student council, band, recycle club, junior counselor’s club, and many other school activities. Besides that he spends about 12 hours a week in the pool training. He travels to many National and International Meets around the USA and in Canada. Besides being a Paralympian, he wants to be a pediatric anesthesiologist. He really likes to help others.
One of the greatest opportunities he has had because of being an amputee, is that he has the honor of working with our military that have been injured while serving and protecting our Country. He visits with them while they are in the hospital and at rehab. He helps them to see that they will still be able to live an active and fun life. They will just do things a little differently. They often have lost hope after what they have gone through, and he tries to help them overcome and see that if they have a positive outlook, anything is possible! Along the same lines, he is often asked to talk with children that have sustained an injury causing a limb to be lost and help them to realize life can still go on.
Cody’s amazing will do, can do attitude will get him anywhere in life! He has helped countless individuals with physical challenges learn that they too can and will accomplish and do whatever they set their mind to!
